Normally I have the quite-capable Anfim Super Caimano Titanium grinder paired up with the Speedster Espresso machine, but I wanted to see how it would handle the best all purpose home grinder available today - the Baratza Vario. Here's the goofy little result. Mainly this was a test to see how the new video / youtube mode of my new phone worked.

gotta love any machine with '1st gear', '2nd gear'... hehe.
ReplyDeletewish i could get a grind like that so i won't have to touch it... mine always clumps... used a rancilio, upgraded to mazzerE... must be humidity in MO ;)
My awesome barista Beata was pulling the shots, did pretty well - she felt it was a bit messy, but otherwise the Vario handled the Speedster quite well.
ReplyDeleteWuddya know, it's Mark from Coffee Geek. That would explain the flawless extraction! I'm drooling over that speedster. What an incredible machine. Does the Vario do it justice?
ReplyDeleteHi Mark, wanted to quickly add that after dialing in my new Vario today, it indeed does a nice distribution. Its really nice being to able to grind, tamp and pull. Vario is amazing...
ReplyDeleteThat's great, my pet peeve is baristas touching the coffee as well.
ReplyDeleteI try to avoid any kind of touching of the coffee if I can help it, so I taught Beata that as well, if the grinder is capable of doing an even dose - the Anfim does, and the Vario's not too bad either.
ReplyDeleteVery nice video Mark thanks! The timer dosing is a really exciting and a feature I can't wait to test. Also very surprising is that Beata doesn't do any sort of basket preperarion prior to tamping, is this SOP for the Vario?
ReplyDeleteThe Vario handled the Speedster with very little problems. A bit messy, but did the job.
ReplyDeleteHey m8 nice setup! Just a quick question...i'm awaiting a Speedster as we speak and already own the Vario...good match up or not?
ReplyDeleteThat must be one of the best looking espresso machines out there.
ReplyDeleteMy Rancilio looks a bit underdressed compared to this though. Thanks for video!
So how did it taste? :)
ReplyDeletegood vid! very informing. i have been wondering if the vario is really all they say it is. as of now its the one grinder that i am really drewling over!! but i read a forum once that was writen by a guy that was having some troble with his. he said the grind consistancy was a bit off. but it seems like a good burr set and the fact that its ceramic is just great. i really would like to get hands on with one and compare it to some others. i like to spread the grinds out in my hand.
